Accommodation

MADEIRA LOCATION: Right in the middle of the warm Gulf Stream in the Atlantic, roughly level with Casablanca, about 700km from the African coast and 480km north of Tenerife. GETTING TO THE ISLAND OF MADEIRA Germany/Austria/Switzerland: about a 4-hour direct flight, or (very flexible, several daily connections) a short layover in Lisbon!

QUINTA DOS ARTISTAS LOCATION: On the climate-favored south coast at about 350m, the property — more than 1 hectare — sits south-facing on a small ridge. A sunny, panoramic spot, gently terraced with natural stone walls. The airport transfer takes only about 12 minutes. The small town of Santa Cruz is a 25-minute walk away, or 5 minutes by car. Narrow lanes, plenty of restaurants and bars, a lovely seaside promenade, and a long public stone beach — with a lifeguard and a children’s pool in the summer months. Levada hiking trails start right from the property.

On the large property you have sea views almost everywhere. The neighborhood has a small-scale agricultural structure (vegetable and fruit growing), mostly for self-sufficiency or as a side income. The roads are purely access roads for residents, with little traffic. The property is connected to the public drinking water supply, sewage system, and electricity. The farmland is irrigated using water from Madeira’s unique levada system. Surface water is also collected (storage capacity above and below ground of more than 200m3) and used for irrigation as well. An independent power supply has been designed and is planned, with construction expected during the 2018/2019 winter break. A piece of real Madeira.

There are 5 houses and the small restaurant (not open to the public, for Quinta guests only), which is also where the pool (5x12m) is located. The houses contain 6 studios (bed/living room with a small kitchenette and bathroom), 4 suites (fully equipped kitchen-living room, bedroom and bathroom) and 2 apartments (fully equipped kitchen-living room, 2 bedrooms each with its own bathroom). On the property we practice organic farming with many permaculture ideas: potatoes, sweet potatoes, cabbage, kale, broccoli, various salad greens, tomatoes, peppers, chili, peas, beans, lupini beans and more, plus many different herbs. Apple, pear, orange, lemon, lime, avocado, chestnut, fig, mango, custard apple, and apricot trees (new varieties are continually being planted), plus a vineyard, banana plants, and passion fruit arbors.
